Il Brigante is a gelateria in the Italian sense: a case, a scoop, and a decision to make fairly quickly. The shop is very small and the counter takes up most of it, brightly lit and turned toward the product so that what is in the tubs is the only thing you are being asked to look at. There is little or no seating, and none is really needed.

One street off Komachi-dori

The shop sits just off Komachi-dori, the shopping street that carries most of Kamakura’s foot traffic. Being a step back from it is the whole difference. The room stays intimate and relaxed while the crowd moves past outside, which makes this a good way to break a day of walking rather than another queue to join.

Choose from what is in the case

Take the flavors as they come. What is in the case follows what has been churned, so the practical approach is to read it on the day instead of arriving set on something. Il Brigante was named to the Tabelog 100 at number 47 in 2023, which is a lot of recognition for a counter this size and a fair reason to make the short detour off the main street.
