Coffee Fujio

A Nagasaki kissaten running since 1946

Coffee Fujio has been open since 1946, which makes it less a cafe than a postwar Nagasaki institution: a pure coffee shop of the old kind, where the room and the ritual matter as much as the cup. It is also written コーヒー富士男, and the Showa-era character is intact.

The menu is classic to match. Coffee, tea and milk on the drinks side; egg sandwiches, fruit sandwiches and fruit milkshakes on the food side. That is the whole outline, and it has not needed changing.

Retro comfort and a slower hour

The room is a nostalgic kissaten rather than a modern productivity cafe. There is booth seating, retro Western-style decor and a pace that assumes you will stay a while, which is the opposite of a fast-turnover coffee bar.

That is the tradition it belongs to. In a kissaten, lingering over a coffee and a sandwich is the point, and the decor and the pacing exist to make that comfortable rather than to be photographed.

Order the egg sandwich, then add fruit

Start with the egg sandwich, the most consistently named savory item here and the standard by which Japanese coffee shops are usually judged.

Then take fruit in one of two directions. The fruit sandwich is the quieter route, soft bread and cream around cut fruit; the fruit milkshake is the louder one, colorful and closer to a dessert than a drink. Keep the beverages classic alongside them, coffee, tea or milk, and the visit falls into the rhythm the room was built for.
