The house is around sixty years old and was refurbished rather than replaced, so the noise of Shibuya drops away within the first few metres and what is left is a cup of single-origin coffee from Glitch Coffee Roasters.

A house and a garden in Nishihara

The setting is the draw. This is a former Japanese house in Nishihara, near Yoyogi-Uehara, with a small counter at one end of a quiet garden instead of a shopfront on the street. The planting carries the year: cherry blossom, plum and peach, hydrangeas, and trees that turn in autumn, so the same seat is a different visit in April and in November. There are proper tables inside when the house is not holding an exhibition, since the place doubles as a gallery, but many people take the outdoor benches for the light and the view of the garden.

Glitch beans, chosen at the counter

The coffee is single origin from Glitch Coffee Roasters, and the list changes with the season. Expect eight to ten beans at the counter, grouped as Traditional, Innovation and Hard to Find, which is a plain way of telling you how far each one sits from a familiar cup. Roasts are light, and the house suggests drinking them black so the origin character comes through, though milk is available. A representative pour is a Colombian Huila lot with notes of vanilla, milk tea, white chocolate, fresh mango and mint. Staff will talk the profiles through, in English if that helps, so choosing becomes part of the visit rather than a delay before it.

Who it suits

This is a destination cup rather than a convenience one. It suits people who enjoy reading a bean list, asking what a lot tastes like and then sitting with the result: a small counter, a garden, an old house, and a coffee chosen deliberately. Take a bench in the courtyard, order something from the Hard to Find group if you want the strongest reason to have made the trip, and let it cool for a minute before the first sip. The beans change often enough that a second visit is a different cup.
