Curry bread and a katsu sandwich, wrapped and handed across: that is close to the whole transaction at Manpuku Bakery, the Kitahama shop in central Osaka also written まん福ベーカリー. There is no seating and no café side, so the bread case and the sandwich case do all the work, and a steady stream of locals keeps both moving.

What the cases hold

The savoury side is where the shop is best known. Curry bread is the signature, alongside a pork cutlet sandwich and a yakisoba sandwich, the fried-noodle filling that turns a soft roll into a full lunch. Sweet baking runs beside it, and kinako mochi bread is the clearest example: roasted soybean flour and mochi worked into the same everyday format.

Manpuku Bakery placed No. 82 on the Tabelog 100 list in 2022, unusual company for an unassuming Chuo Ward storefront with no dining room at all.

How to order

Take the curry bread first, then a sandwich. The two named sandwiches pull in different directions: the pork cutlet is the heavier, more traditional order, while the yakisoba version sits closer to street food. Add kinako mochi bread if the visit needs a sweet end. Everything travels, which is the point of a bakery built around a bag rather than a table.
