A walnut, a seed and a café for children

KURUMED COFFEE, written クルミドコーヒー, sits in the Nishikokubunji part of Kokubunji, out on Tokyo's western edge. It calls itself こどもたちのためのカフェ, a café for children, and pairs that with 小さなキミと、小さかったキミへ, addressed both to the small guest in front of the counter and to the adult who used to be small. The walnut carries the rest of the meaning: くるみは、種 makes it a seed, while くるみは、これからくる未来 makes it the future still on its way. The result is an unusually wide audience for a coffee counter, taking in children, families, and adults who came for a cup and found the other half of the sentence waiting for them.

The pace is the point

ゆっくり、いそげ, slowly, hurry, is the line the café works to, and the company behind it is named 株式会社フェスティナレンテ, after the Latin festina lente, make haste slowly. In practice that means a room that does not turn its tables, in a residential pocket of Kokubunji rather than on a destination street. The café describes the relationships formed in it as a walnut tree taking shape, putting down roots and stretching branches before it bears anything, which is a long view for a neighborhood coffee shop to take. The effect on a visit is simple: an hour here is expected rather than tolerated.

The room matches the language. Wood tones, daylight and quiet make it a place to read in, and the seating is arranged for staying rather than for turnover. Tabelog's 100 list picked the café up in 2025, which put a residential Kokubunji address on a national roll call.
