Why go

Coffee only, and nothing else on the counter

The Lab serves coffee drinks and very little else, which is unusual enough in Barcelona to be the point. Nomad Coffee Lab opened in 2014 as the original Barcelona shop of Nomad Coffee, three years after the project began as a London coffee cart, and it still frames the room the same way: espresso, filter, cold brew and seasonal single-origin roasting, with no brunch, no pastry case and no long dining ritual. Named coffees associated with Nomad include Peru Churupallana, Colombia Ají Las Flores, Burundi Nemba and Shakiso Hadeso, alongside limited editions, competition lots and bottled cold brew. The Lab also became the platform for the rest of the company: Roaster's Home followed in 2015 and Every Day in 2016. Jordi Mestre founded it, and the head of coffee started here as a barista before becoming a partner.

A plant-lined shop with a calm specialty feel

The original shop hides behind an urban jungle of potted plants in Passatge Sert in the Born quarter, a visual identity that suits a compact, coffee-only room. It behaves less like a full-service café than a shop for tasting, ordering and buying coffee, and after the pandemic it worked almost as a showroom for the roastery, with barista numbers rising from three to five as tourist traffic returned. That suggests a counter-led, high-throughput visit built around preparation and conversation rather than table service. The short stay is the design, not a limitation, and the plants outside are the only thing that slows anyone down on the way in.

Espresso first, cold brew when Barcelona turns hot

Start with espresso for the most direct read on the roasting and the barista work. The range runs to espresso coffees, filter coffees, limited editions, competition lots and seasonal single origins, so espresso sits at the centre of the Lab's identity. Filter is the natural second route, especially for anyone interested in Peru Churupallana, Colombia Ají Las Flores, Burundi Nemba or Shakiso Hadeso. Cold brew is the hot-weather answer, in draught or bottled form, and bottled cold brew makes the same coffee portable, which fits a shop built for buying as much as for drinking. Food, matcha and tea are not what this branch is for, and treating it as a quick, focused stop gets the most out of it.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Nomad Coffee Lab?

Espresso, for the most direct read on the roasting and the barista work. Filter is the natural second route, especially for the named single origins such as Peru Churupallana, Colombia Ají Las Flores, Burundi Nemba or Shakiso Hadeso. Cold brew, in draught or bottled form, is the answer when Barcelona turns hot.

Is there food at the Lab?

No. The Lab is a coffee-only room, and has been since it opened in 2014 as the original Barcelona shop of Nomad Coffee. The counter covers espresso, filter, cold brew and retail beans, with limited editions and competition lots alongside the seasonal single origins, and the visit is built around the cup rather than a menu.
