Jamsil Coffeebar

Intelligentsia's direct-trade coffee, poured inside a shopping mall. Jamsil Coffeebar is a branded Intelligentsia bar rather than an independent café, and it was the roaster's third Seoul coffeebar to open in its year.

Espresso, batch brew, pour over

The bar runs three formats and does not complicate them: espresso for short cups and milk drinks, batch brew for ready filter coffee, and pour over when you want a cup made to order in front of you.

All of it comes from Intelligentsia's direct-trade programme, which is the reason to choose this over the other coffee in the building. The focus is narrow and deliberate, and the coffee is asked to carry the whole proposition rather than share it with a food menu.

A polished mall counter made for staying

The setting does a lot of the work. Jamsil Coffeebar sits inside Lotte World Mall, so the traffic around it is retail rather than residential, and the room is built to absorb that: bright and polished, with spacious seating and WiFi.

That makes it more useful than a quick espresso window. People sit, work and wait here, and the format is counter service with a real room attached rather than a queue and a lid, which is what separates it from the rest of a mall floor.

Order by brew method

Order by method rather than by menu name. If you want to taste what the roaster is doing, take the pour over. If you want it quickly and still good, batch brew is the answer. Espresso is the base for anything with milk in it.

Treat the place as what it is: an Intelligentsia branch in Seoul, part of a wider Korean presence, doing specialty coffee properly in a location where you would not necessarily expect to find it.
