Why go

House roasting behind a small Vienna counter

We Harvest. We Roast. We Brew. We Serve. The motto is painted on the wall and it describes the operation accurately: Gota Coffee Experts is a specialty roastery with a café attached, not a café that buys its beans in. The house programme runs on 100% arabica, single origins and medium-to-light roasts, aimed at a cup that reads fruity and floral with chocolate underneath, medium acidity and enough balance to drink without argument.

The shop's own line, the coffee you want rather than the coffee you need, sets the tone, and the invitation is to sit rather than to grab. Gota also runs its own workshops and SCA classes for people who want to learn brewing and extraction properly, which puts a teaching function alongside the bar, while retail beans and home brewing kit carry the same idea out the door.

The recognition backs it up. Gota was placed third worldwide and first in Europe by The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops for 2025, and it was named again in the European Coffee Trip awards for the same year.

A small room in the 15th district

The café is compact and easy to be in, better suited to two people talking over coffee than to a large brunch party. It sits on Mariahilfer Straße in Vienna's 15th district, an area still filling in around it, which gives the shop the feel of a specialty destination inside an ordinary neighbourhood rather than a showroom on a tourist street.

The interior leans into coffee history. White walls, considered signage and a collection of brewing equipment gathered across the decades, from a polished French press to a siphon that looks like laboratory glass, with vintage grinders lined up above the entrance arch. Each piece is named, so it is easy to ask about one while you wait, and the room ends up explaining itself.

Order the flat white, then look at the food

The flat white is the clearest first order: strong without being harsh, with silky milk foam and a flavour that shifts depending on which roast is on that week. If you would rather taste the beans without milk, the espresso and filter side is where the single origins show, alongside a decaf and cold brew for the warm months.

Food is more substantial than a pastry shelf. Brunch runs to a Peruvian plate of poached egg, quinoa, vegetables, sweet potato and smashed avocado; streaky bacon with fried egg on bread, with avocado if you want it; and chia pudding with fruit and yoghurt. On the sweet side, banana bread, brownies and cookies are the names to remember, and any of them will sit happily beside a second cup.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Gota Coffee Experts?

The flat white is the first order: strong, with silky milk foam and a flavour that changes with the week's roast. If you want the beans without milk, move to espresso or filter, where the single origins show. For food, the brunch plates are substantial, and banana bread or brownies work beside a second cup.

Does Gota roast its own coffee?

Yes. Gota works as a roastery with a café attached, running 100% arabica single origins at medium-to-light roasts aimed at fruity and floral flavours with chocolate underneath. Beans and brewing equipment are sold to take home, and the shop teaches its own workshops and SCA classes for people who want to brew better.
