Why go
A bar, a few seats, and coffee roasted since 2022
kaffemik is small enough that the bar is most of the room: a counter, a couple of tables, blue patterned tiles, an arched glass front, exposed wooden beams and a high white ceiling. It has been running in Vienna's Neubau since 2014, just off the Mariahilfer Straße shopping flow, and it took on its own roasting in 2022, working in a light, thoughtful style that puts origin, variety and processing at the front of the cup. The name covers both halves of the business, kaffemik coffee roasters, and the founding idea came from Greenlandic open-door hospitality, which is a fair account of how the room behaves. People stand at the bar, take one of the few seats, or leave with a bag.
Flat white first, then whoever is guesting
The menu is deliberately stripped back. No spiced mixes, no whipped cream, no long list of drinks; the flat white is the house pour, an Australian-style drink close to a cappuccino but with a higher coffee-to-milk ratio, and it is the clearest first order. Beyond the house blend, a different independent European roaster guests each month, which is where the bar does its exploring. One December slot went to Tim Wendelboe of Oslo, fruity and quite strong. The house roasts run through Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Guatemala and Honduras, with a decaf Colombia among them, and notes that stretch from nectarine, apricot and rosehip tea to panela, milk chocolate, lavender and shortbread. Cascara turns up too, as dried coffee cherry and as a lemon cascara syrup.
Use it as a daily stop, not a destination
This is a coffee-first room built for repetition rather than occasion: a morning cup, a short conversation, a quiet twenty minutes in a busy district, or a bag bought on the way past. The staff are friendly and the mood is relaxed and community-minded rather than theatrical, and the scale of the place keeps it that way. The retail side extends the same idea beyond the counter, with a coffee subscription, a coffee of the month, roast samples and accessories, so a guest roaster can carry on at home after the shop has moved to the next one. Sourcing and fair pay are part of how the business talks about itself, and the same small group roasts and serves, which is why the bar can answer for what is in the cup.

Frequently asked questions
What should I order at kaffemik?
The flat white. It is the house pour, an Australian-style drink close to a cappuccino but with a higher coffee-to-milk ratio, and the menu is stripped back enough that it is clearly the point. After that, ask which European roaster is guesting this month, or take the house roast as filter.
Does kaffemik roast its own coffee?
Yes, since 2022, in a light style that keeps origin, variety and processing legible in the cup. The house range has run through Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Guatemala and Honduras, including a decaf Colombia, and cascara turns up as dried coffee cherry and as a lemon syrup. A guest European roaster joins the bar each month.
