What goes in the cup

Espresso, filter coffee and cold brew are the three routes, all of them drawn from Fürth Kaffee blends and single origins. Filter is treated as a real option rather than a concession to whoever asks for it, which is the useful signal in a city where the default coffee order is still a milk drink in a traditional room. Cold brew covers the warm months. Whole beans are sold to take home and ground on request, so a bag leaves the counter set up for the brewer you actually own rather than guessed at, and the person weighing it out is the same person who has been pulling shots from it all morning.

The room

It is compact and high-ceilinged, hung with artwork, furnished with pieces that do not match, and the effect is bohemian rather than clinical. Vienna has no shortage of coffee rooms with high ceilings, but most of them are grand; this one uses the volume differently, keeping the footprint small and letting the height carry the noise. It runs lively without turning chaotic. Neubau is a district of small shops, galleries and studios rather than grand boulevards, and the café reads as part of that fabric rather than an import into it. Service is over the counter, and the room works as somewhere to stand and talk, or sit with a book, rather than somewhere to eat a meal. In a city whose café tradition runs to marble, newspapers and waiters in waistcoats, this is the other Vienna: smaller, quicker and organised around what is in the cup.

Order espresso first, then take beans

Start with an espresso, which is the fastest read on the house blend and on how the counter likes to pull it. Move to filter if you want to hear what the single origins are doing, since that is where origin character survives the milk and the pressure. Cold brew is the third route and the one that handles a warm afternoon. Food stays deliberately minor: croissants alongside the coffee rather than a kitchen, which keeps the counter fast. The most useful thing to do on the way out is buy beans and have them ground while you wait.
