Espresso, flat white, filter, and not much else

The drinks list is three lines long and that is deliberate. Espresso first, flat white if milk is wanted, filter when there is time to drink slowly. Kaffeemodul is a tiny bar on Josefstädter Strasse where the counter takes up most of the room, and the short list is what allows a space that small to run properly.

Order at the counter, wait a moment, and drink standing or on the way out. In a city whose coffee culture is built on marble tables and newspapers, a bar this narrow is a deliberate counter-argument, and it is aimed squarely at the cup.

Beans and brewing kit alongside the cups

The bar doubles as a shop. Coffee to take home sits beside the equipment to brew it with, and workshops fill in the part a bag of beans cannot teach on its own. That combination explains the tone of the place: the people behind the counter are as ready to talk about grinders and ratios as to pull a shot.

It also explains why the drinks list stays narrow. The retail side carries the range, so the bar does not need to print one. If a cup lands well, the same coffee is usually available to take away, which is the most useful thing a small counter can offer a visitor.

The room is minimalist and quiet, intimate by size rather than by design, and it works as a service point instead of a sitting room. That makes it a poor choice for a long afternoon and an excellent one for a deliberate cup between other things.

First visit: take the espresso, because it is the plainest read on the roast. Second visit: the filter, because it gives the coffee more room to explain itself. The flat white is the compromise for a day that needs milk. The Josefstadt around it is residential and calm, so the walk to the door is part of what makes the stop worth making, and the bar is small enough that a busy moment means waiting outside for a minute. That is the trade for a counter this focused, and on the evidence of the cup it is a fair one.
