The café belongs to Hôtel des Arts Saigon, MGallery, a boutique property that opened in October 2015 and builds its story on Vietnam in the 1930s, mixing French Indochina references with contemporary luxury. Among the hotel's places to eat and drink, this is the quiet one; the market-inspired kitchen and the rooftop bar take the louder ends of the range.

The building doubles as a gallery. The owner's personal collection of paintings and antiques hangs across the property, and the guest rooms carry art deco lines, so the café sits inside an art-filled hotel rather than merely near one. The period framing is more than decoration: the design borrows from the French colonial city while the service belongs to a modern five-star hotel, and the café is where the two are easiest to see at once.

How to spend the afternoon

Order the afternoon tea. It is the reason the room exists and everything else is arranged around it. Take a table within earshot of the piano, fetch something from the library, and let the service carry the rest, since this is full hotel service rather than a counter you queue at.

What you are buying is a composed interlude: French elegance, old-world glamour and the pace that goes with them, in a city where most café options are faster, cheaper and louder.
