Two beans a week, from small roasters

Every coffee here is made with one of two beans, a kräftig and a fruchtig, and both change weekly. They come exclusively from small roasters, which gives the bar a speciality rhythm built on shifting profiles rather than one fixed house blend. The choice you make at the counter is really which direction you want that week’s coffee to lean, strong or fruity.

Drinks go beyond espresso. Cappuccino is the standard order, while tea and an infusion drink cover the non-coffee side, so a visit can be a coffee stop or simply a pause with something warm. Coffee education sits close to the counter too. Workshops run on espresso machine basics and on latte art, and a tasting session covers how to judge a cup and put words to it, which suits a bar that expects you to notice the difference between one week and the next.

Self-service, with a living-room feel

The name is the concept. Wohnzimmer means living room, and this one in Linz’s old town is furnished like one, with coloured armchairs, a sofa, shelves and enough decoration to blur the line between café and front room. There are thirteen seats inside and eight outside, so it stays small and neighbourhood-scaled.

Service is self-service, which sets the tempo: order at the counter, choose a seat, stay as long as it takes. The house pushes the domestic idea further than most, offering a hot-water bottle if you want one and encouraging you to claim a favourite spot. It works for a solo visitor with a book as readily as for friends, families with pushchairs or older regulars.

Order the cappuccino with a pastry

A cappuccino with a pastry is the representative order, because the food is compact and sweet-led. The classics are a warm French croissant, a pain au chocolat and a pastel de nata, which is a wider viennoiserie range than a small coffee bar usually keeps.

Beyond pastry there are Glückskugeln and changing desserts served in glasses, plus cakes and cinnamon rolls. Vegetarian and vegan sweets are built into the menu rather than added as an exception, so a plant-based order does not mean settling for whatever is left over. Choose your week’s bean first, kräftig or fruchtig, then pick between butter pastry and a vegan cake depending on which way the cup has gone.
