Why go

Seeds roasts its own coffee and pours it two ways that matter: as a pour-over, where the bean does the talking, and as espresso, where milk does some of it. The Homewood shop is the company's headquarters and its main retail room, open since around 2014, and it placed 66th on The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops list in 2025.

House-roasted, poured two ways

Everything on the bar starts from beans the company roasted itself, so there is no multi-roaster line-up and no guest bar to decode. The roasting happens for the wider company here too, which is why this room reads as the source rather than an outpost. Pour-over is the clearest brewed view of that roast, made slowly and served with little between you and the coffee. Espresso covers the rest, as a latte, cappuccino, cortado or anything else built on milk. Cold brew handles the Alabama half of the year, and seasonal latte specials give the board something that changes. Being roastery and shop at once means the coffee on the bar is never more than a room away from where it was roasted.

A Homewood room with an industrial edge

The space reads industrial-rustic, raw materials with warm finishes and a modern café frame around them. Its neighbourhood matters as much as its build: Homewood is walkable and residential enough that the shop absorbs errands, work breaks and unplanned meetings, which is the third-place role most good specialty cafés end up playing. The company leans into that deliberately, presenting itself as community-oriented rather than as a chain in waiting. About a dozen years in, it has moved past opening buzz into the more useful position of being the place people default to.

Order by brew method

Decide by method rather than by name. A pour-over is the right call when the question is what Seeds actually roasts, because nothing else on the menu shows the bean as plainly. An espresso drink is the better answer for a shorter, more concentrated cup or anything with milk in it. Cold brew is the summer default, and a seasonal latte is worth asking about when one is on. The strength here has stayed consistent as Birmingham's coffee scene grew up around it: house-roasted beans, carefully brewed, in a long-running Homewood room.
