Start at the pastry case

Pastries are baked fresh and will be warmed if you ask, which tells you most of what you need to know about how the counter is run. Fruit tarts are the brighter choice, sticky buns the richer one, and muffins the straightforward everyday order. Locally roasted coffee comes alongside them, with sandwiches and light bites for anyone who needs the stop to be savoury rather than sweet.

The shape of the menu is simple by design: coffee and bakery early, a sandwich when something more substantial is wanted, snacks and drinks for a short pause between other things.

A first-floor room inside a larger project

The café sits on the first floor of the Elevation Convening Center and Hotel, part of the Equal Justice Initiative's Elevation project on the former Hilltop Arms site. Phase One opened in October 2025, and Bryan Stevenson, who founded EJI, has described Elevation as a place of refuge and sanctuary for people engaging with Montgomery's civil-rights history.

Around the café are meeting rooms, an art gallery, a hotel run by Ithaka Hospitality Partners, and AYA Soulful Dining, the property's signature restaurant. The café is the informal entry point to all of it, and it is deliberately separate from AYA in both scale and intent.

Who it is for

Use it as a pause rather than a meal. It serves hotel guests, visitors moving between the Legacy Sites and local residents, and it is set up for connection and quiet rather than for a formal sit-down. That makes it useful in a way the rest of the property is not, because you can come in for twenty minutes without committing to anything. The counter also does the ordinary work any hotel café has to do, feeding people who arrive early and people waiting on a meeting upstairs, which is why the format stays practical rather than precious.

Coffee and a pastry near the front of the day is how the room works best, with a sandwich later if the afternoon runs long. Given the weight of what visitors are carrying in and out of the Legacy Sites nearby, part of the value here is simply that the café asks nothing of you. Coffee, a warm pastry, a seat, and no further obligation.
