Why go
A roastery compound that also pours
Quat is the roastery, not a branch of one. It is the Glassell Park compound behind Kumquat Coffee and Loquat Coffee, built as the shared headquarters where both brands' coffee is roasted, and the name is simply the two of them run together. What makes it worth visiting rather than merely worth knowing about is that the production site serves as well: retail beans, a café counter and a dedicated tasting bar under one roof.
The project soft-opened across late 2023 and early 2024 and quickly became the third point of an ambitious Los Angeles coffee operation. The identity is production and tasting rather than a broad café menu: roasted coffee, espresso service, a short pastry programme and a room kept minimalist enough that the coffee is the only thing to look at. Eater included it in its 2025 coffee guide.
Two speeds under one roof
Quat sits near the Atwater Village border, away from the busy café corridors of Echo Park and Downtown, and it shares a wall with Forest Lawn cemetery, which is where the calm comes from. The layout supports two rhythms: ordinary café ordering for espresso drinks, iced coffee, cold brew, pastries and beans, and a guided tasting counter for Atelier Q.
Atelier Q is the part worth planning around. It is an omakase-style, multi-course coffee tasting in which a member of staff selects and presents coffees in sequence, closer to a seminar than to a single pour-over, built around seasonality, extraction and the sensory differences between lots. If that is not what you came for, the café side runs perfectly well on its own.
What to order at Quat
Start with coffee roasted through the Kumquat and Loquat programme, since the roastery is the reason the compound exists. Everyday orders are espresso-based drinks, iced coffee, cold brew and iced lattes, and a Turkish-style coffee turns up when it is on, which fits the group's interest in preparations from outside the standard specialty playbook. A good first move is to compare a familiar espresso drink against whatever the more unusual preparation is that day.
For a longer visit, Atelier Q is the signature. The tasting relies on selection rather than a fixed drink list, so seasonal availability decides most of it. Food is deliberately secondary, house-made baked goods built for a slow morning with coffee rather than a menu competing with the cup.

What should I order at Quat Coffee?
An espresso drink or cold brew made with coffee roasted on site for Kumquat and Loquat, since the roastery is the reason the compound exists. A Turkish-style coffee appears when it is on. For a longer visit, Atelier Q is the guided multi-course tasting.
What is Atelier Q?
It is Quat's guided coffee tasting, an omakase-style, multi-course sequence in which a member of staff selects and presents the coffees. It runs closer to a seminar than to a single pour-over, built around seasonality, extraction and the sensory differences between lots, and it is what distinguishes the compound from a café.
