Why go

Two named drinks, and the espresso behind them

The two drinks to know at Kumquat are the Cooler and the Copenhagen. The Cooler is tea-led, built from oolong, green plum extract and peaflower tea, and it is the clearest sign that tea is treated as a programme here rather than as a courtesy for people avoiding coffee.

The Copenhagen goes the other way: espresso with spiced apple cider syrup, mascarpone foam, cardamom and cinnamon, closer to pastry than to a flat white. Underneath both is a straightforward bar of espresso, americano, cappuccino and lattes, plus specialty teas and a monthly special blend that changes what the house tastes like from one month to the next. That blend is the part of the menu that rewards coming back, since it moves the espresso in a different direction every few weeks, and the teas are held to the same standard rather than kept as an alternative.

A York Boulevard counter with sourcing behind it

Kumquat opened on York Boulevard in 2018 and has kept the small-counter format while the business around it has grown. The sourcing is the ambitious part: direct relationships with growers in Ethiopia, Ecuador, Panama and Colombia, and a stated aim of getting drinkers to pay more attention to what is in the cup.

It belongs to the Korean coffee wave that has reshaped specialty coffee across Southern California, where transparency and customer education do the work a wall of brewing equipment does elsewhere. The Infatuation included it in its 2026 coffee guide. The same team later opened Quat, a separate roasting and tasting project in Glassell Park, and Fondry, a bakery a short walk from this counter, in 2024.

How to order

On a first visit, order the Copenhagen. It is the most characteristic drink on the board and the fastest way to understand how this bar thinks about espresso. The Cooler is the order for the other half of the menu, and it beats a standard iced tea when the afternoon turns warm.

For a plainer read, take the monthly special blend as an espresso or a cappuccino, since that is the cup that shows what the sourcing is actually buying. Ask what the blend is before you order, because it will not be the same one next month. If the visit is turning into a morning rather than a stop, finish at the bakery down the street.

Frequently asked questions

What should you order at Kumquat Coffee?

The Copenhagen is the most characteristic drink: espresso with spiced apple cider syrup, mascarpone foam, cardamom and cinnamon. The Cooler is its tea-led counterpart, made with oolong, green plum extract and peaflower tea. For a plainer read on the coffee, take the monthly special blend as an espresso or cappuccino.

Where does Kumquat source its coffee?

Directly, through relationships built with growers in Ethiopia, Ecuador, Panama and Colombia. The buying is tied to a wider push toward transparency and customer education, so the monthly special blend and the espresso bar are meant to be tasted with some idea of where the coffee came from.
