PPD, short for Por um Punhado de Dólares, has been pouring in central São Paulo since 2015 and defines itself through that one phrase: direct, quality-focused coffee with nothing staged around it. The name is the Portuguese title of A Fistful of Dollars, the Clint Eastwood film, though the room owes nothing to the reference beyond the joke on the sign. Consolação puts it in the middle of the city rather than in a quiet residential pocket. It sits near Praça Roosevelt and the Teatro Cultura Artística, in a cultural corridor where daytime coffee drinkers, residents and theatre-goers all pass through the same door. It was ranked ninety-first in The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops for 2025.

A compact café-bar with a direct feel

The scale is the first thing to understand. With thirty-two seats this is a focused neighbourhood stop rather than a dining room, and counter service keeps ordering, waiting and settling in all within a few steps of the bar and the people working it. The room is modern and comfortable in a small way, with no heavy theming despite the western title. The identity shifts across the day: coffee anchors the daytime, then the bar side takes over in the evening, so the same address can be a morning espresso or a late drink. Sitting close to the theatre also means the evening crowd changes character once the performances let out. That double life is a large part of why it has held its place in the neighbourhood for a decade.

How to place it among the city’s coffee stops

Treat PPD as a compact specialty café with a bar dimension and a strong sense of where it is. It has become a steady fixture of the Consolação and Praça Roosevelt circuit, and the coffee is the reason to come rather than a long published list of signature drinks. Food is not the main story at the original café. The clearer development came in late 2024, when the same group opened PPD Pão e Vinho next door, a separate restaurant and bakery built around sandwiches and wine.
