Roastery coffee at the harbour

Piano by Kahiwa is Kahiwa Coffee Roasters’ waterfront café and wine bar, a distinct Lahti room within the same family as the group’s café and bakery elsewhere in the city. The coffee comes out of the roastery rather than a wholesale account, which is the useful thing to hold onto: this is a roaster-linked bar rather than one built on a published list of origins, processes or brew methods. The bakery side supplies the case, with baked goods and buns made by the group’s own specialty bakery, so the pastry has the same provenance as the cup. Later in the day the wine bar takes over, with international wines and beer on tap.

Glass, timber and the lake hour

The setting is the clearest strength. The café occupies the Piano Pavilion in Lahti Harbour, on the shore of Lake Vesijärvi, and the lake, the trees and the light through the glass are as much the reason to go as anything on the counter. The building was completed in 2008 as part of the city’s wooden architecture park, using wood and glass for a light, airy structure, which gives the café an architectural story most harbour rooms do not have. The interior is bright and modern, and the mood moves with the hour: coffee and buns in the morning, brunch and small plates through the middle of the day, then wine and beer as the water goes dark.

Plan a simple visit

Plan around the combination that actually holds: Kahiwa coffee, the bakery case, brunch-style food and the pavilion itself. If coffee leads the visit, think of it as roastery coffee rather than a single-origin flight, and order accordingly. If food leads, the honest answer is that the strength is the bakery rather than a set of named signature dishes, so take a bun or a pastry with the cup and add brunch if the timing suits. The room also works socially, since it is café and wine bar in the same space. What makes it distinctive is the overlap: roastery culture, bakery comfort, a wine list, and a wooden pavilion sitting on the water.
