Good Life beans and an all-day breakfast set

Sävy pours Good Life Coffee, roasted in Helsinki, and the beans are single origin or single estate rather than blended for consistency. The house line about it is unfussy: anyone can brew coffee, but good coffee depends on dialling in the grind, on the quality of what you started with, and on knowing where it came from. The café sits in Kallio and keeps to a compact idea, specialty coffee with a light breakfast and pastries, and the breakfast sets run all day, every day, so a visit does not have to fit a narrow morning window.

The room is small, intimate and firmly of its neighbourhood, and it fills with locals rather than with people making a special trip. Kallio’s slightly bohemian character suits a café this size, and the café returns the favour by staying unpretentious. Service is straightforward daytime café service, and the tone is practical and hospitable, down to the invitation to ask about treats for particular diets. The drinks list stretches further than filter: espresso classics, plus Iced Latte, Iced Americano, Cold Brew, Espresso Tonic and an Affogato in the warmer months, with ice cream behind the last of those. Tea is part of the breakfast choice too, supplied by Teemaa and Teepolku, which keeps the non-coffee side as carefully sourced as the coffee.

Start with the coffee. Filter from Good Life Coffee Roasters is the plainest route in and the one that shows the roaster relationship most clearly. Espresso Tonic is the sharper cold option, and the Affogato is the one that turns coffee into dessert. Food is strongest read through the breakfast sets. One combines natural yoghurt with homemade granola and seasonal toppings, a croissant from L’Artisan, and a filter coffee or tea. Another builds a sandwich on Bistro Nolita’s sourdough, in ham and cheese or marinated tofu, with fresh pressed apple juice from Grannas on Åland. The Full Set puts all of it on the table at once: yoghurt, croissant, sandwich, juice and a hot drink. Beyond the sets there is a short selection of handmade pastries from Helsinki bakeries, cakes, buns and cookies among them, which is the easiest thing to add to a second cup.
