El Fant - Cafe & Bar

Why go

El Fant’s own espresso blend, made with Inka Paahtimo from washed Peru and Costa Rica, anchors a small Helsinki room that also runs jazz nights, natural wine and a carrot cake people argue about.

A house espresso blend, hand brew and a bar

Coffee is the clearest part of the offer. El Fant serves hand-brewed coffee from beans its baristas select, sourced in Finland and further afield, and sells freshly roasted bags for home.

The signature is specific. El Fant made its first espresso blend with Inka Paahtimo in Helsinki: washed coffees from Peru and Costa Rica, roasted medium dark, smooth and lightly chocolatey, 100% Arabica, poured as espresso in the café and bagged for home brewing. Tea is on the list too, and the bar side adds natural wine and beer as the day turns toward music and gatherings.

Seventy square metres of Finnish pine

El Fant is a 70-square-metre café and bar with three front-of-house spaces: a central bar and two adjoining dining areas. The design leans on Finnish materials and local makers rather than generic café styling, with four-centimetre-thick pine boards from Northern Finland lining the room and forming much of the furniture.

Furniture was custom built with Puutamo, and the built-in galvanised steel elements with the Helsinki metal studio Paja&Bureau. Open sightlines and shared tables create a communal, unhurried rhythm rather than a grab-and-go setup, and largely unadorned surfaces leave the handmade irregularities visible. That suits the wider identity: a small café that also hosts jazz nights, book gatherings, art pop-ups, workshops and seasonal tastings. The entrance is step-free and the room is wheelchair accessible.

Order the espresso blend, then the carrot cake

Start with the Inka Paahtimo collaboration if coffee is the reason to come. Its lightly chocolatey medium-dark profile is why the oat milk cappuccino gets singled out as well. For slower coffee, the hand-brew programme is the other route, using barista-selected beans.

Food follows the daytime rhythm: daily lunch of salads, pastas and sourdough toasts, plus house-made desserts. The carrot cake has the strongest identity of the lot, called the best in town and made soft, moist and restrained in its sweetness. Italian pappardelle and smoked reindeer with Finnish quark are the other dishes worth knowing. The café sits in the old town’s Torikorttelit quarter near Helsinki Cathedral and the City Museum, which is why breakfast, lunch and evening wine trade all land in the same day.
