Why go

Only coffee, done well

The house line is Nomas cafe, bien hecho, only coffee, well done, and the bar takes it literally. There are no pastries, no brunch plates and no separate tea or matcha programme. What it does have is Nomad’s own roasting: the company buys through direct trade, including through the Typica platform that connects roasters with producers, roasts at its Barcelona production site and pours the results across this counter. This was the first room in the story, opened as Coffee Lab and folded into the Nomad name around 2015 and 2016, and it still behaves like a lab, with attention on preparation and on the cup rather than on a menu. Jordi Mestre, who founded the company and leads the coffee, sets the sourcing and roasting direction the bar serves.

A narrow passage in El Born

The bar sits in a narrow pedestrian passage in El Born, a few minutes from the Born Centre and the Santa Caterina market, which puts it on a route used by locals, workers and visitors crossing the old city. The room is small, pared back and modern, with nothing competing for attention. Seating is limited, so the natural rhythm is a focused pause rather than a long session: walk in, order, watch the bar work, drink. The contrast with the surrounding streets is part of the appeal, since the passage is quiet while the area around it is one of the busiest in Barcelona. It works best as a daytime stop between El Born and Urquinaona.

Filter first, then the flat white

Start with filter. It gives the clearest view of what the roasting and the sourcing are doing, and it is the drink the bar is set up to explain. Then move to a flat white to see how the same coffee behaves with milk, texture and sweetness, which is where a lighter roasting style either holds up or does not. Espresso sits between the two. Beans are worth taking home for the same reason: the roaster and the bar are one operation, so what is in the grinder is what is on the shelf. The wider network runs to Petit Nomad, the Frutas Selectas site and Hq Cal Nomad, but this original bar remains the most stripped-back version of the idea, with Coffee Lab in its history and coffee as the only thing on offer.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Nomad Coffee Bar?

Filter first, because it shows most clearly what the sourcing and roasting are doing, then a flat white to see how the same coffee behaves with milk. Espresso sits between the two. There is no pastry or brunch menu, so the order stays on the drinks and the beans.

Does Nomad roast its own coffee?

Yes. The company buys through direct trade, including through the Typica platform that connects roasters with producers, and roasts at its own Barcelona site before serving the results at this bar. It was the first room in the Nomad story, opened as Coffee Lab before taking the Nomad name.
