Coffee at the start of the day, cocktails at the end

Lobby is built around a deliberate shift. Mornings are specialty coffee, made with the care the category implies, plus matcha for anyone not drinking coffee. As the day turns, the same room becomes a cocktail bar, with spirits and cigars taking over from the espresso machine.

That double identity is the main thing to understand before going. It is not a café that reluctantly pours drinks at night, nor a bar that keeps a coffee machine for appearances. Both halves are properly staffed and properly stocked, and which one you get depends entirely on when you walk in.

A Debar Maalo room

The setting is Debar Maalo, the part of Skopje where people go to sit outside and stay a while, and the room is built for lingering rather than for a quick transaction. The bar leans lounge rather than counter, and the crowd mixes locals with visitors, which suits a place whose whole proposition is that you can arrive at almost any hour and find something appropriate to drink.

Its coffee credentials are not incidental to that. Lobby was named a country winner in the European Coffee Trip awards for 2025, an award that comes from specialty coffee circles rather than from nightlife listings.

Skopje does not have many rooms that can hold both audiences without one of them feeling like an afterthought. The reason this one manages it is that the two halves are run as separate programmes in the same space rather than as one long menu covering everything at once.

Order by the hour

Early, order specialty coffee. It is the side of the operation that earned the recognition, and the morning service is where sourcing and extraction get the attention. Matcha is the daytime alternative and is treated as a real order rather than a concession to people who do not drink coffee.

Later, switch entirely. Handcrafted cocktails are the evening's argument, backed by a spirits selection deep enough to be worth asking about, with cigars for anyone who wants one. The only real mistake is arriving at one end of the day expecting the other.

Decide which version you want before setting out, and treat the other half as a reason to come back rather than something to squeeze into the same sitting.
