A macchiato, a cake, and a table you can keep

The macchiato is the standing order at Dit' e Nat', and it sets the tone for a drinks list that stays deliberately simple: cappuccino, a selection of teas, and homemade iced tea when the weather turns. Nothing about the coffee is roastery-led or technical. It is a café list, made consistently, and the macchiato is the version of it people order without thinking. The food follows the same register: homemade cakes for a coffee stop, light sandwiches and small plates when the visit becomes lunch, with vegetarian choices throughout and vegan options that run as far as a burger and fries.

Day and Night, taken literally

The name means Day and Night in Albanian, and the place has worked that way since it opened in 2009. By day it is a bookshop and a café at once, quiet enough for reading or a laptop, with books, coffee and conversation sharing a room without any of them taking over. The space is artistic and lived-in rather than designed, the sort of bohemian room where the shelves and the walls have accumulated over years instead of being styled, and it has a long-standing role in Pristina's books, art and community programming. Calling it a café undersells it slightly, because it works as a meeting point, and the bookshop is why people treat it as one.

In the evening the volume rises. Cocktails and beer replace the coffee, and the programme fills in around them: live music, book presentations and a Sunday cult film slot that regulars keep the night free for.

How to use the room

Start with the macchiato. If the visit is going to be a long one, move to a tea or a cappuccino, or the homemade iced tea in summer, and put a homemade cake beside whichever you choose. When the table turns into a working lunch, the light sandwiches are the better order, and the vegetarian and vegan side of the menu is worth reading properly rather than defaulting to cake.

Later, let the room decide. The best way to use Dit' e Nat' is to arrive without a plan: coffee beside a book in the afternoon, a drink when the music starts, and no particular reason to leave in between.
