Why go

A window, a cone, and a cappuccino inside it

Fenster Café serves coffee through a street-facing opening, which is where the name comes from: Fenster is German for window. The drink that made it is the Fensterccino, a cappuccino poured into a chocolate-covered waffle cone, invented to give a coffee-only window something no other café in Vienna had.

Getting it to work took longer than the idea suggests. The cones came with high minimum orders, cracked in transit, and needed changes to the packaging and the recipe before they arrived intact. There is now a production zone given over to making them, and two more cones, pistachio and almond, have joined the original.

The window is small, the operation is not

The business started in 2011 as a modest coffee shop with very little to work with, and the concept sharpened as it grew: instead of a room with tables, a takeaway window and coffee only. The reasoning was practical. Coffee alone let the team make the coffee better, and window service removed the space, furniture, cleaning and bathroom demands of a seated café.

Behind that small frontage is more than 1,300 square feet of working space: several espresso machines, grinders, milk foam machines, ten refrigerators given over to milk, a warehouse holding two to three weeks of supply, a training area, an office, a staff room, a workshop and the cone production zone. The output runs past 130,000 drinks a year, which is what the window is really the face of.

Order the Fensterccino

The signature order is the Fensterccino: espresso, milk, chocolate and waffle cone in one hand, with nothing to put down and nowhere to sit. It is the clearest calling card the café has, and the reason the cone gets its own production line instead of being bought in as a garnish.

Beyond it the menu is deliberately narrow. Fenster serves coffee drinks and no food, using beans it roasts itself, so the choice is between formats rather than between courses, and the pistachio and almond cones are the only variations on the theme. This is not a grand Viennese coffeehouse with a salon to settle into; it is the opposite, a concentrated production point on a central street where you order, take the cup, and walk back out into the city with it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Fensterccino?

A cappuccino served inside a chocolate-covered waffle cone, and the drink Fenster Café is known for. It was created to give a coffee-only window a signature of its own, and the cones are made in a dedicated production area after several rounds of recipe and packaging changes. Pistachio and almond cones have since joined it.

Does Fenster Café serve food?

No. Fenster serves coffee drinks only, made with beans it roasts itself, and the narrowness is deliberate: doing one thing let the team do it better. There is no seating either, since the whole café is a window onto the street. The chocolate-covered cone is as close to food as the menu gets.
