A bookshop that reads like a gallery

The room was built to show books the way a gallery shows work: handcrafted shelves made locally, covers turned face out instead of spine out, bright rooms with sun coming through the windows and large pictures by a local artist hung above the stock. The café sits near the front of the shop, there is a quiet outdoor space at the back, and a loft above looks down over the store for children. Local writers are part of that programme, and the shelves are curated rather than stocked to a formula, so the selection reflects a person rather than an algorithm. Order coffee or matcha, take whatever is in the case, then spend the rest of the visit on the shelves, the art on the walls, the loft or the yard. Few cafés in the city are built to be used this slowly, and fewer still expect you to.
