Why go

The Snowy Plover is the order that explains the counter: San Pellegrino sparkling water, brown sugar syrup, two shots of espresso and a cap of house-made whipped cream, landing somewhere between a coffee and a float.

Counter service in the Outer Sunset

Andytown Coffee Roasters opened in 2014, founded by Michael McCrory and Lauren Crabbe to roast specialty coffee for the neighborhood, and this San Francisco corner is the original shop. Order at the register beside a small pastry case, then find room in a narrow space where a window table seats about six and bar stools line the walkway. A few outdoor seats appear when the weather allows.

Baristas set the pace, chipper and attentive even when the line runs to the door, which it regularly does. The room stays laid-back and calm despite the traffic, the kind of place people settle into for an hour on a slim footprint. It works as roastery, bakery and café at once rather than as a dining room.

White walls, succulents and the Pacific down the hill

The space is a sliver of a place: clean white walls, rustic wood, a few decorative succulents and not much else. That makes it compact rather than sparse, and it borrows most of its atmosphere from the corner it sits on.

From this original Outer Sunset shop the Pacific is visible down the hill, and the sunset light reaches into the room late in the day. The crowd is neighborhood regulars and takeaway traffic, with bags of beans going out alongside the drinks.

Snowy Plover, soda bread and the roast list

Coffee is roasted in house and sold as blends and single origins, among them the Wind & Sea Blend, a cold brew blend, Ethiopian lots and a Mexican coffee from the Bella Vista Women's Group in Chiapas, which shows the producer-linked side of the sourcing. The Short Strand Blend, the Shore Leave Hook Blend and a decaf from Mexico sit on the same shelf, and espresso drinks are doubled by default rather than on request.

The Snowy Plover is the signature, and Steep Tea is the named alternative for anyone off coffee. Baking happens in house too, led by Northern Irish griddle-baked soda bread from co-founder Michael McCrory's grandmother's recipe, served with jam, raw cheddar or bacon. Fresh pastries and seasonal bakes fill the rest of the case.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Snowy Plover?

It is Andytown's signature drink: San Pellegrino sparkling water, brown sugar syrup, two shots of espresso and a cap of house-made whipped cream, served cold. The result lands between an iced coffee and a float, sweet on top but still bitter underneath, and it is the first thing to order on a first visit.

What should I eat at Andytown Coffee Roasters?

The soda bread. It is griddle-baked in the Northern Irish style from a recipe belonging to co-founder Michael McCrory's grandmother, and it comes with jam, raw cheddar or bacon. Everything in the case is baked in house, so fresh pastries and seasonal bakes are the fallback if the bread has run out.
