Why go

One family roasts the coffee and bakes the cake in this Leopoldstadt café, which is rarer than it sounds. The beans come off their own drum and the Topfentorte is made that morning.

A micro roastery in the second district

Vogel Kaffee is a specialty coffee café and micro roastery in the Nordbahnviertel, run by Ali and Michaela Vogel and pairing house-roasted coffee with homemade pâtisserie since 2019. Ali came to coffee from cocktail bartending, moving through barista work and latte art before opening the first café here, and that route shows in how the bar is run.

The retail range explains the roasting side. There is a House Blend from Brazil and Peru, a Kraft Blend of 60% Arabica and 40% Robusta, and single origins including Honduras Altos de Erapuca Farm, Kenya Gicherori AA, Brazil Santos Dulce and Ethiopia Idido, roasted medium or light depending on the coffee. At the bar that becomes espresso, batch brew, pour over and iced preparations, pulled on a La Marzocco, with baristas who will explain what they are doing if asked. Ali Vogel is a 2024 Austrian Latte Art Champion and a repeat finalist at the national championships, and he teaches the craft in workshops at the café.

A neighbourhood room that expects children and dogs

The space is modern, minimalist and welcoming, with seating indoors and out. Part of the service is self-service, including a water station, which gives it more of a specialty-café rhythm than a table-service one.

It is built for the neighbourhood rather than for quiet: there is a children's play area and a babyccino corner, dogs are allowed, and the room mixes espresso drinkers, families, pastry orders and laptop sessions. Expect it to be lively at busy times.

Order the cheesecake first

The clearest food order is cheesecake. Michaela Vogel bakes them fresh daily, using milk and quark from Lower Austria and organic eggs from a Waldviertel farmer, and the following they have built reaches well beyond the district. Topfentorte belongs beside the cheesecake as a defining bake rather than a minor extra, and there are vegan options and a weekend breakfast for anyone who wants more than a slice.

Pair the bake with the coffee programme. A House Blend espresso is the everyday match, a pour over of Ethiopia Idido or Kenya Gicherori AA is the one to order when the point is tasting, and an iced preparation works when the weather does. Any of the three sits comfortably with a slice.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Vogel Kaffee?

Cheesecake, baked fresh each day with milk and quark from Lower Austria and organic eggs from the Waldviertel, and a Topfentorte if the counter has both. Drink a House Blend espresso with it, or a pour over of Ethiopia Idido or Kenya Gicherori AA when tasting is the point.

Can I work from Vogel Kaffee?

Laptop sessions are part of the mix, alongside espresso drinkers, families and pastry orders, so working here is normal. It is not a silent room, though. There is a children's play area and a babyccino corner, dogs are welcome, and busy periods are lively, so bring headphones if concentration matters.
