The order at Sun & Waves starts at the counter and can go in two directions: a coffee with something from the kitchen, or a basket of market goods to take back to the beach house. It opened in August 2024 in Spring Lake, on the New Jersey shore, as the food and retail side of Faherty, the clothing company whose whole identity is built on the coast.

The room follows that brief. Sun & Waves is a café, a kitchen, a small market and a gift shop at once, and it does not pretend to be a bakery or a patisserie. The full name, All Day Kitchen & Coastal Market, is an accurate description of what happens inside.

An all-day kitchen rather than a pastry case

The kitchen runs straight through the day rather than in shifts, which is the useful thing to know before walking in. Sandwiches, wraps, salads and bowls carry the middle of the menu, rotisserie dishes are there for anyone treating it as lunch proper, and coffee drinks cover the café side from the morning on. There is no named pastry chef and no viennoiserie programme; the food is prepared, generous and easy rather than technical.

Around the food, the shelves do the rest of the work. Market goods and coastal gifts sit alongside the seating, so a stop here often ends with something bought rather than eaten. It is family-friendly by design and reads as a neighbourhood fixture in a town whose population swells every summer.

A morning coffee or a midday plate

Come early for coffee and something light, or in the middle of the day when the kitchen is the reason. Order at the counter, then take a seat inside or carry the food out.

If the plan is a whole meal, the rotisserie and the bowls are the strongest end of the menu. If it is a quick stop, a coffee and a sandwich do the job, and the market shelves are worth a pass on the way out.
