Korean café drinks and a case full of characters

SORO SORO is the Portland branch of a Korean-inspired daytime café and dessert shop, opened on East Burnside in June 2019 by a couple who had run cafés in Arcadia and Cerritos in California, sold that business in 2017, and spent five months touring the United States in an RV before settling here. The identity is hybrid on purpose: café, dessert shop and tea house, with sweets carrying as much weight as the drinks.

The drinks stay in Korean café territory while keeping Portland coffee habits. Espresso drinks use Stumptown beans; the tea side runs to sweet assam and Earl Grey milk teas, plus iced, hot and honey tea options. Thyme-infused black iced tea, matcha lattes, oat milk lattes and bear-shaped latte art round out a list where presentation is part of the order.

Desserts are the signature

The pastry case is where the shop puts its personality. The sweets are subtle and not overly sweet: kitten-face cheesecakes, a chocolate Earl Grey cake with googly eyes, a miniature chocolate cheesecake with ears, sweet potato cake and a six-layer rainbow cake. The snow affogato is the theatrical one, and the only item that has to be watched as it is served.

A neighbourhood room for coffee and sweets

The space is open and white-walled, with little cat figurines and paintings set into the nooks, a look that matches the character cakes and the latte art. It is small but built for lingering, with enough seating for reading and casual visits without feeling cramped.

In the surrounding neighbourhood it has become a gathering place for families, students and neighbours, which reflects a community-minded reading of Korean café culture. The result is less a single-purpose coffee bar than a neighbourhood dessert café, where matcha, milk tea, Stumptown espresso and plated sweets share equal weight.

For a first visit, start with the snow affogato, then choose a drink: a Stumptown espresso, or the tea route with Earl Grey milk tea, assam milk tea, matcha latte, honey tea or thyme-infused black iced tea. Add one character dessert. The kitten-face cheesecake and the miniature chocolate cheesecake with ears show the playful side, the chocolate Earl Grey cake brings tea flavour to the case, and the sweet potato and rainbow cakes keep to the mild, not-too-sweet register.
