Why go
One flavour, made every morning
Vanilla is the whole menu at S. Jelbert’s, made by hand every morning within a hundred metres of the counter. The shop has stood on New Road in Newlyn since 1945 and still works from a recipe dating to the Second World War, built on local ingredients and very little else. The list is short by design: fresh, natural, and free of what the shop calls nasty additives. Ownership changed in 2021; the recipe did not, and the premises got only a light refresh. The choice you make is about format rather than flavour: cone or tub, with Cornish clotted cream, a chocolate Flake, or both.
A Newlyn habit rather than a café
This is a walk-up counter, not a room to sit in. The ice cream is scooped by hand from a large tub, with no frills and no rotating flavours, and there is no espresso menu, pastry case or brunch service behind it. The season is part of the ritual. The shutters go up in spring and stay up until the end of October, which is why the reopening reads locally as a fixed point in the year. “We always know when spring is here. Jelbert’s is open,” as the shop puts it.
The same vanilla travels. An ice cream bike, a trailer and a converted Mini carry it out to weddings and local events, so the recipe turns up well beyond Newlyn without being altered for the occasion. That is the whole extension of the business: one product, moved around. Its reputation runs a long way past the village, but nothing about the counter has scaled up to meet it.
Ask for vanilla with clotted cream
The house order is vanilla with Cornish clotted cream on top, the combination most associated with Jelbert’s, and in a tub the cream often arrives alongside so you can add it as you like. A chocolate Flake pushes it toward the old-fashioned seaside finish, and taking both is standard rather than greedy. More than eighty years of selling a single thing has left the counter with nothing to explain: choose the format, choose the toppings, and eat it on the road outside while it lasts. If you are here between spring and late October, this is the simplest good thing in Newlyn.

Frequently asked questions
What can you order at S. Jelbert's?
Vanilla, in a cone or a tub. That is the entire menu. The additions are Cornish clotted cream, a chocolate Flake, or both, and with a tub the clotted cream often comes alongside so you can spoon it on yourself. The ice cream is made by hand each morning within a hundred metres of the counter.
Why does S. Jelbert's sell only vanilla?
Because it has sold almost nothing else for more than eighty years. The recipe dates to the Second World War and is made fresh daily from local ingredients, so the shop treats one flavour done consistently as the point rather than a limitation. New owners took over in 2021 and kept the recipe exactly as it was.
