The cup here is meant to stay in the country that grew it. Rubia roasts Rwandan coffee on site in Kimihurura and pours it across the bar, and the founding idea behind that is specific: build specialty coffee culture at origin, so the best Rwandan lots are not only something the country exports. Sourcing runs directly to Rwandan farmers, so the coffee arrives with the grower attached rather than as an anonymous green lot. Food sits in the background; the room is arranged around the cup.

A counter with a classroom behind it

Rubia opened in 2016 as a roastery, cafe and education hub, and the teaching side is not decorative. Its founder is a certified Q Grader and an authorised SCA trainer, and the coffee is brewed by SCA-certified baristas, which puts sensory evaluation and formal barista training directly behind the bar. Programmes run from farm-to-cup experiences through to professional certification courses, so the same room serves people drinking a flat white and people learning how coffee is grown, graded, roasted and prepared.

What to drink and why it carries

Order the coffee and ask what is on, because the whole point of the roastery is that the lots come straight from Rwandan farms and are roasted in the building rather than bought in from an outside roaster. Rubia was ranked No. 54 on the 2026 World's 100 Best Coffee Shops list, the first coffee shop in Rwanda to appear on it and the only entry in that year's ranking from a coffee-growing country in sub-Saharan Africa. Come when the priority is a focused cup with a clear line back to the farms that grew it rather than a long food menu.
