Coffee and tea held at the same level of attention

Ondo takes its name from the Japanese word for temperature, or warmth, and the room is built to make that read as more than branding. This is a specialty coffee and tea house in East Hollywood, and the two sides carry equal weight: matcha and Japanese teas are not a courtesy line under an espresso menu, they are half the reason to come. The model is the kissaten, the Japanese coffee house where a drink is something to sit with rather than something to collect, and it explains the pacing more than any menu detail does. The music is part of the service

What most people notice first is the sound. The selection is chosen deliberately and played as part of how the room works, not as filler behind the grinder, which puts Ondo close to the kissaten ideal where what you hear and what you drink are meant to belong together. The look is minimal and restrained, the light is soft, and service runs from the counter without pushing anyone along. It suits reading, a slow conversation or an hour of doing very little better than a fast pickup.

Start with matcha

Matcha is the clearest opening order, and the tea side is where the house puts most of its care. Coffee sits beside it rather than above it, so a second visit can reverse the order without missing the point. Ondo opened quietly in 2025, with little announcement, on a stretch of East Hollywood better known for residential blocks, Latin American food and working creative spaces than for Japanese tea. That is part of what it is doing there: adding a slower counterweight to the neighbourhood's busier coffee service. Come with an hour rather than ten minutes.
