Why go

A micro-roastery on an island, a coffee bar in Södermalm

The coffee at Muttley & Jack’s is roasted out in the Stockholm archipelago and poured in Södermalm, which is an unusual arrangement for a city café and the whole point of this one. The roastery is small enough to work in microlots and nanolots, hand-roasting quantities most operations would consider impractical, and the bar in town is where that work reaches a cup.

The house started in 2017, founded by an Irish transplant who named it after his Boston terrier; the dog is also where the bean-shaped logo comes from. The single origins rotate rather than settle. Colombia La Esperanza, Brazil Santa Luzia, Rwanda Gitesi and Colombia La Tormenta have all held the board, and the roasting leans towards nuance rather than a fixed house profile.

A neighbourhood room for breakfast, fika and lunch

The kaffebar is a Södermalm neighbourhood room rather than a formal destination: breakfast early, fika through the afternoon, and a lunch offer in between. People read here, meet here and stare out of the window here, and the room is arranged to allow all three without hurrying anyone along.

That makes it a different proposition from a production roastery with a retail hatch. Bags of beans and brewing gear sit alongside the espresso machine, but the café side carries its own weight, and the two halves explain each other. Order at the counter, take a table, and the coffee arrives with more information attached than most rooms this casual bother with.

Ask what is open on the brew bar

The most useful order is whichever origin is currently open, because the selection turns over quickly and the interesting lots do not last. Sourcing runs through importers including Nordic Approach, Sucafina Specialty and Panama Varietals rather than a direct-trade claim, chosen for shared standards on quality and sustainability, and the founder travels to origin to meet producers.

The range swings hard by process, so it pays to ask. Naturals and honeys from Brazil, Rwanda, Burundi and Costa Rica sit next to washed lots from Peru, Colombia, Kenya and Ethiopia, and the same counter has carried coffees from Myanmar and India. If the origin card matters to you, this is a bar that will talk through varietal, washing station and process before pulling anything. If it does not, order a milk drink and let the roast argue its own case.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Muttley & Jack’s?

Ask what is open on the brew bar. The single origins turn over quickly, so the most interesting lot is rarely the same twice, and the staff will talk through varietal, washing station and process before pulling anything. If you would rather not choose, a milk drink built on the house roast makes the same argument more quietly.

Does Muttley & Jack’s roast its own coffee?

Yes. The roastery sits on a small island out in the Stockholm archipelago and works in microlots and nanolots, hand-roasting quantities that larger operations would find impractical. The Södermalm coffee bar is where that roasting reaches a cup, and bags of the same beans are on the shelf to take home.
