Matcha and honey, then a yuzu cheesecake

The drink to order first is the matcha and honey latte, the most specific thing on the menu and the reason most people cross Hoxton for it. Around it sits a small Japanese-leaning cafe: speciality coffee from Vagabond, Japanese tea, homemade cakes and a short savoury list. A matcha float takes the same green-tea theme somewhere colder and closer to dessert. On the sweet side, yuzu cheesecake is the named bake to keep in mind, bringing a citrus note that fits the rest of the room.

Onigiri, miso soup and a room full of objects

The savoury anchor is onigiri, and it deserves better than side-note treatment: the tuna mayo onigiri with miso soup turns a coffee stop into lunch, and warm onigiri comes up again and again in accounts of the place. Salads and sandwiches fill out the daytime menu. The room is the other draw, closer to a collector's front room than a coffee bar, with gorgeous ceramics, shelves of miniature furniture, a very real-looking washing machine among the objects, and illustrations of onigiri along the walls tying the decor back to the food. The effect is personal rather than styled to a template.

If you would rather stay light, pair Japanese tea or a Vagabond coffee with a slice of whatever is homemade that day, and take the yuzu cheesecake when it is there.
