Why go

Matcha treated as the whole menu, not a flavour

MATCHADO is a Japanese tea café and retailer, so matcha and Japanese teas are the centre of the menu rather than a green option beside the coffee. It sources matcha, ingredients, tea tools and tableware directly from Japan and states the case plainly: 100% premium Japanese matcha, natural ingredients, no artificial colours or flavours. Named products map the range, from Yame Yabukita Matcha to a sweetened matcha made specifically for lattes, with a matcha and hojicha sweets category behind them. The tea is whisked for balance and smoothness rather than pushed for bitterness, across both traditional serves and softer modern ones. The Infatuation included it in its 2026 matcha guide.

A tea counter with a shop attached

It works best as a focused stop for tea and something sweet, with retail built in. The counter runs alongside pickup and an online store, so matcha, sweets and tea tools go home as often as they are consumed on the spot. London sites run across King's Cross, Chiswick, Acton and Bloomsbury, with Herne Hill still to come. The rooms are clean, bright and deliberately minimal, quiet enough to make the tea the thing you notice, and the house language about unwinding is meant fairly literally. The project began in 2020 and has kept the same brief since: minimalism, good design, careful craft, and support for the growers and producers it buys from across Japan.

Start with the matcha latte and the canelé

Order the matcha latte first, made with the sweetened matcha blended for that purpose, then add a bake that shows how seriously the kitchen takes matcha pastry. The matcha canelé is the useful signature, a Japanese turn on a French classic that puts the tea flavour into a familiar shape. From there the range runs through matcha sablé, matcha scones, matcha dorayaki, matcha granola, a vegan matcha loaf cake sweetened with banana and dates, and a seasonal matcha lemon cake. Two items carry Great Taste awards: the gluten-free matcha brownie with white chocolate, in 2021, and the Yame Yabukita Matcha itself, in 2023. A Japanese cream biscuit trio in matcha, bamboo charcoal and hojicha is the other place the hojicha shows up.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Matchado?

The matcha latte, made with a sweetened matcha blended specifically for milk drinks, then the matcha canelé, which is the bake that best shows what the kitchen does with tea. Beyond those, the range runs to matcha sablé, matcha scones, matcha dorayaki, a vegan matcha loaf cake and a matcha brownie.

Where does Matchado's matcha come from?

Directly from Japan, along with the other ingredients, the tea tools and the tableware. The house line is 100% premium Japanese matcha with natural ingredients and no artificial colours or flavours. Yame Yabukita Matcha is the named tea to look for, and it won a Great Taste award in 2023.
