Why go

Coffee is roasted a few steps from where it is poured. Linea Caffe runs an organic roastery and cafe in San Francisco, with the Mission District room open since 2013 and the Potrero Hill roastery cafe since January 2020, in a building that was Intelligentsia’s roastery before that. Before Potrero Hill the roasting was done at Pulley Collective in Oakland, and the premises carry an older thread too: the owner’s earlier company, Ecco Caffe, worked out of the same space before Intelligentsia bought it in 2009.

Certified organic, biodynamic, regenerative

The sourcing is the argument. Linea roasts Certified Organic, Biodynamic and Regenerative coffees in San Francisco, a narrower buying brief than most roasteries set themselves, and it shapes what reaches the bar. A blend runs on espresso, a rotating single origin goes on batch brew filter, and an organic Ethiopia Suke Quto has been among them.

The equipment matches the roastery-cafe identity: a La Marzocco espresso machine and a La Marzocco KB90 on the bar, a Probat UG-22 behind the retail bags, and all of the coffee roasted on site. Recent years pushed the offer further, with blended coffee drinks, delicate pour-over service, a bean bar, and an A4 espresso blend served only as pour-over or espresso.

A counter you walk along

The Potrero Hill space is a single-storey building with a bold blue facade and red-framed windows, roastery on the left and cafe with retail on the right. Service runs as a walk: guests start at the retail end, pass bags of beans and the cakes, and finish at the espresso machine where drinks are handed over. There is terrace or parklet seating outside for anyone staying.

Food stays in the bakery lane and is specific where it counts: cakes and pastries at the counter, with goods from Dynamo Donuts and Neighbor Bakehouse at the first two shops. In late May 2025 a cart went out from the Potrero Hill roasting facility lined with pastries and bags of coffee, which is about as good a summary of the operation as any.

Order the cortado first, then look at the batch

Start with the cortado for a compact read on the espresso blend, since espresso service is the centre of the bar. A straight espresso gives the same view of roast and extraction. For a longer cup, take the rotating single origin on batch brew filter, which is where the buying brief shows most clearly.

For a slower order, the pour-over service and the bean bar are the way in, and the A4 blend is worth asking for since it is poured only that way. On the food side, stay with the cakes, pastries and bakery goods on the counter, and treat the stop as a roaster cafe visit built on organic, biodynamic and regenerative coffee rather than a meal.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Linea Caffe?

Start with a cortado, the most compact read on the espresso blend, or a straight espresso for the same view of roast and extraction. For a longer cup, take the rotating single origin on batch brew filter. The A4 blend is worth asking about, since it is poured only as espresso or pour-over.

Is the coffee roasted on site?

Yes. The Potrero Hill site is a roastery and cafe in one building, with a Probat UG-22 behind the retail bags and all of the coffee roasted there. The buying brief is Certified Organic, Biodynamic and Regenerative, and an organic Ethiopia Suke Quto has appeared on batch brew filter alongside the house espresso blend.
