Why go

Scandinavian baking, light roasts, one counter

The counter runs on two things at once: bakes made fresh in-house each day and light-roast coffee served across espresso and filter. This is La Cabra’s first bakery in Thailand, the Danish group’s Silom branch, and it brings the Scandinavian baking style that made the name to a district better known for offices and night markets. The format is bakery-cafe rather than bread shop, which matters for how the room gets used. Coffee is not a courtesy alongside the pastry: the venue works as specialty coffee roaster and bakery together, with the espresso and filter sides both taken seriously and the light roasting style carried straight over from the group’s Danish rooms. The baking is the other half of the draw, made on site each morning rather than trucked in, which is why the pastry line-up carries as much weight here as the coffee board.

Concrete, steel and harder edges

The space is a real departure from the group’s usual look, and the house has said as much: the concrete structure of the building called for a different approach, one that answers the harder edges and heavier atmosphere of the site. The result mixes stainless steel, marble and concrete with the Danish references that run through the rest of the group, minimalist without turning cold. Practically, it works as a walk-in daytime room. People come for coffee, breakfast, a pastry, a sandwich, or time at a table, and the queue can gather at busy stretches. Laptops are welcome, which makes it a workable morning room as well as a stop between meetings.

Order the country sourdough first

Start with the country sourdough. It is the clearest signature on the menu, freshly baked, chewy and well balanced, and it arrives as a composed plate rather than a loaf to carry away: whipped brown butter, seasonal homemade jam, Gruyère and a soft-boiled egg alongside. That set of accompaniments captures the bakery-cafe idea exactly, treating bread as the centre of a proper sit-down breakfast. For something more substantial, four grilled sandwiches carry the savoury side: kimchi bacon melt, pesto tomato melt, ham and cheese melt, and tuna melt, each pressed until crisp outside and soft within, and each built to sit beside a serious cup of coffee. Order the filter if the day’s light roast deserves the attention, or espresso if the visit is short.
