Why go

Espresso from a Chania roastery

Espresso is the shortest route into what Kross Coffee Roasters does, and the roastery behind it does the rest. The company roasts for its own shops and for wholesale customers out of Chania, at an output of roughly ten tons a year, buying green coffee from farms across many producing countries. Named lots have included Costa Rica Luis Carlos Picado Montero, Ethiopia Aricha Wubanchi and Ethiopia Gersay Beyou.

The programme runs past one short drink. Espresso drinks lead, pour-overs give the single origins room, and a cold drip tower adds a slower cold format that is more considered than a standard iced coffee. The house vocabulary shows up in the retail line too, with the Lighthouse Signature blend and Lighthouse on ICE alongside capsules, drip bags, pantry items, kit and merchandise, so the roaster identity stays visible well beyond the bar. Kross placed 15th in The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops for 2025.

Old-town Chania and the morning pull

The original café on Crete opened in August 2015 beside one of the old town's historic mosques, the first of six Kross locations, and roasting followed in 2017. It sits at the entrance to the old town, in a neighbourhood where people-watching sets the rhythm and early morning light does much of the work on the room.

The setting has since been extended. A late-1800s multi-storey building, once commercial below with owners living above, was taken through a complete overhaul: structural upgrades, accessibility improvements, a restored courtyard with a new terrazzo floor and a redone interior. The layout now spans three levels, with the bar at the centre of the ground floor and a lower-floor studio used for private talks and morning yoga. The impression is heritage fabric and modern coffee design working on the same site.

Order espresso, then keep it simple

Start with espresso, then stay inside the roastery's strengths. If filter is running, a pour-over is the most direct way to taste one of the single origins; if the cold drip tower is in service, take that rather than a generic iced coffee, because it is a format the house has actually built around.

Food is concise support rather than a full kitchen. Pastries come through Black Eyed Kate, the group's own spin-off pastry and cake shop, and there is a granola made in the same collaboration. Cakes are a real part of the draw, and the wider menu stays deliberately short so the coffee keeps the attention. The business behind it is a family one, run by siblings Sotos and Stavros Michael with pastry chef Katerina Mavromataki, which is why the pastry link stays this close to the brand.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Kross Coffee Roasters?

Espresso first, since it is the shortest read on coffee the company roasts itself in Chania. A pour-over is the better choice if you want a single origin such as Ethiopia Aricha Wubanchi to show, and the cold drip tower is the house's own cold format rather than a generic iced coffee.

Is there food at Kross?

The menu is short by design so the coffee keeps the attention. Pastries and cakes come through Black Eyed Kate, the group's own spin-off pastry and cake shop, along with a granola made in the same collaboration. The business is family-run, with a pastry chef among the principals.
