Why go

Coffee here is Fuglen’s, poured as espresso, batch brew and pour over, and the day starts on it. Kampen Kaffe & Bar sits on one of Kampen’s squares in Oslo and shifts through the afternoon into a natural wine bar without changing rooms or character.

One counter, two halves of the day

The site traded as Javelin until 2019, when it joined the Fossekallen group alongside FUGLEN and Byens Tak, which is how the Fuglen coffee arrived on the bar. Mornings run on that coffee; later, natural wine and cocktails take over, with homemade small dishes built from local small-scale producers’ ingredients bridging the two.

Food stays deliberately light: homemade cakes and baked goods, sandwiches, soup, pastries and snacks, with several vegan options across lunch and into the evening. None of it is set up as a menu to work through, more as something to have in front of you while the room fills.

Snug corners and second-hand furniture

The room is intimate and lived-in rather than designed: snug corners, second-hand furniture, coffee served in everyday porcelain. It faces one of the neighbourhood’s public squares, so on a good day the cappuccino goes outside and the square becomes part of the visit.

Culture is part of the programme too. Kampen Kaffe & Bar has run Jazz på Kampen with Kampen Kirke since 2019, and live jazz turns up through the year rather than as a one-off. That collaboration is a large part of what makes the place a neighbourhood fixture rather than simply a café with a wine list.

Order by the time of day

Early, the anchor is Fuglen coffee: espresso if you want it short, batch brew for something to sit with, pour over if you want the bean to show. Add a cake or a pastry and the morning is done.

Later, move to natural wine or a cocktail and order the small dishes alongside them. That is the version of the room the evening is built for, and a jazz night is the best time to see it working. If you are eating rather than drinking, the soup, sandwiches and vegan options carry the middle of the day.
