Why go
A Brewers Cup champion behind the counter
Kali Coffee bar's filter is poured by an Irish champion. Co-owner Enda Johnston took the national Brewers Cup title in 2023 and went on to represent Ireland at the international final, which is an unusual credential for a small seaside counter and it shows in how the brewed coffee is handled. He runs the bar with Laura, and the two of them have kept the operation deliberately small.
The roasters are chosen rather than inherited. Kali buys from Irish and European roasters that pay farmers fairly and keep long relationships at origin, and it sells bags and merchandise beside what it pours, so the shelf is an extension of the menu rather than a gift-shop afterthought.
A small room in Salthill
Kali describes itself as "a little hideaway that's passionate about coffee", which is accurate about both the scale and the priorities. It opened in Salthill in January 2021 and has worked ever since as a coffee-first counter in a seaside neighbourhood rather than a café with a long food menu bolted on.
The other half of the stated interest is "coffee and the planet", a line that turns up in how the beans are bought rather than in signage on the wall. In 2025 the bar was recognised in the European Coffee Trip Awards, which comes from inside the specialty scene rather than from a general listing, and it is the clearest outside marker of where Kali sits on the Irish coffee map.
Order filter first, then take a bag home
Order the filter. With a Brewers Cup champion on the bar, brewed coffee is what separates Kali from the rest of the Galway coast, and it is where the roaster choices are most legible in the cup. Ask what is on and take the recommendation rather than defaulting to a familiar name.
Espresso and milk drinks are built on the same sourcing, so ordering one is a different choice rather than a lesser one. Before leaving, look at the retail shelf: the bags are the roasters the bar has picked out, and buying one is the closest you get to taking the counter home with you. The room is small, so a cup carried down to the Salthill seafront is a legitimate way to drink it.

Frequently asked questions
What is Kali Coffee bar known for?
Brewed coffee is what Kali is known for, poured by co-owner Enda Johnston, who won the Irish Brewers Cup in 2023 and represented Ireland at the international final. The Salthill bar buys from Irish and European roasters that pay farmers fairly, and it was recognised in the European Coffee Trip Awards for 2025.
Which roasters does Kali Coffee bar use?
Kali works with Irish and European roasters chosen for quality and for paying farmers properly, rather than committing to a single house roaster, so the coffee on the bar rotates. Bags from those roasters are sold on the retail shelf beside the counter, which makes buying one the simplest way to work out what the bar likes.
