Coffee first, then breakfast and cake

Specialty coffee is the anchor at Kaferdam, and breakfast is the reason most people stay longer than one cup. The brand puts coffee and good breakfasts at the front of everything it does, and the kitchen carries that through the day with brunch, lunch, cakes and pastries. It is a daytime café with enough range to cover a meal or a sweet break rather than a single-product counter.

Natural wine widens the drinks list beyond coffee, which gives the later part of the day a different character. That combination, specialty coffee in the morning and a glass of something natural in the afternoon, is what separates Kaferdam from the standard Polish brunch café. The same standard runs across the branches, which is why the name has spread beyond one address.

The glass pavilion in the Zamek courtyard

The Św. Marcin branch is the younger of the two Poznań sites and the more striking one. It occupies a courtyard directly in front of the Zamek Cultural Centre, in a bright pavilion glazed on three sides, so the room is full of light and faces historic architecture on almost every side.

That setting gives the branch a role beyond coffee. It sits on the walking route through the Imperial District, which makes it a natural pause between the Zamek and the rest of the quarter, and the glass walls mean the city stays part of the visit rather than shut outside. Expect a mix of people working, people meeting and people stopping mid-walk.

How to plan the visit

Choose the branch by what you want from it. The Św. Marcin pavilion suits a slower morning: coffee, breakfast and a table by the glass, with the cultural centre next door if the day continues. The older branch covers the same programme in a different setting.

Order coffee first, since that is what the place is built on, and let the food follow. Breakfast and brunch are the strongest part of the kitchen, cakes and pastries cover the middle of the afternoon, and natural wine is there when coffee has stopped being the right answer. Come mid-morning if you want the pavilion at its brightest and least busy, and take a seat against the glass if one is free.
