The coffee at Jo's downtown is the house’s own, roasted by La Colombe, and that relationship is what separates the counter from a generic diner pot. The shop has been open in downtown Austin since 2006 and describes itself without ceremony: “No pretense, just a diner-style assortment of good food, hot coffee, and a seat waiting for you.” The drinks list runs wide rather than technical. La Colombe coffee, espresso drinks, lattes, matcha, other specialty beverages and cold beer all sit on the same board. Read it as approachable café coffee with a named roaster behind it rather than a laboratory bar built for tasting notes.

All-day breakfast, burgers and brunch

The kitchen carries as much weight as the coffee. All-day breakfast, hearty lunch plates and weekend brunch are the frame, and the house is not shy about putting one of the best burgers in town, a slice of something sweet and an ice-cold beer in the same sentence. Specific plates run from a Texas Wagyu Hot Dog and a Corned Beef Sandwich to chicken and waffles, grilled cheese, soup, a bacon taco and a breakfast split with bananas, berries, yogurt and granola. Breakfast tacos, pastries and sandwiches sit across the wider Jo’s menu too. This is a diner-café kitchen rather than a pastry case built around a bakery partner, and the breadth is why people stay for a full meal instead of a cup.

Start with coffee and a breakfast taco

The first order is still the La Colombe-roasted coffee with a breakfast taco, because that pairing captures what the branch promises: hot coffee, breakfast food and an easy downtown seat. Closer to midday, the burger, the Corned Beef Sandwich, the Texas Wagyu Hot Dog, grilled cheese, soup or chicken and waffles show the heartier side. Matcha is the usual move for anyone off coffee, with the specialty drinks and cold beer widening the list further. The room supports all of it, with indoor tables, booths, counter and bar seating, high stools and outdoor tables, and an eclectic wall of stickers and posters including a nod to the Ugly Dog Contest. It works for breakfast, brunch, a quick latte or a long diner-style sit in the Second Street District.
