Why go

Milk cream cakes are the whole business here: made fresh to order rather than pulled from a case, built on 100% organic fresh milk cream and seasonal fruit, and kept deliberately less sweet. Harucake opened in Los Angeles in 2019 with a Korean-style template and the motto “Less sweet. More love.”, and its Koreatown counter became the reference point for the city's minimalist cake trend.

Milk cream cakes, mochi balls and egg tarts

The core order is the fresh milk cream cake. The lineup covers Assorted Cake, Green Grape Yogurt, Banana Chocolate and Biscoff Mocha, with Pure Milk Cream, Chocolate Earl Grey, Strawberry Milk Cream, Mont Blanc Chestnut and Lotus Mocha also in the rotation. Green Grape Yogurt and Strawberry Milk Cream are the two most tied to the queue.

The smaller pastry side is narrow and specific. Small Bakes cover Dubai Mochi Balls, which pair chewy mochi with chocolate, pistachio cream and crisp kadayif, and Egg Tarts built on flaky shells with soft custard. There is no savoury programme, so the draw stays cake, cream, fruit, mochi and custard.

A counter that treats cake as jewellery

The room was worked out in the same register as the cakes. The wall colour was chosen to resemble butter creamed for hours and repainted three times before it landed. Large glass doors open on an angular counter where cakes are set out as if they were jewels, and a photo booth near the entrance prints on stark white receipt paper. The presentation explains how far these cakes travel on social feeds, but the product carries it: restrained shapes, light cream, fruit that changes with the season.

How to approach a visit

Because everything is made fresh to order and batches are limited, the counter typically sells out. Weekends can mean a wait of up to two hours; weekdays are easier. Start with a milk cream cake, choosing Green Grape Yogurt or Strawberry Milk Cream for the flavours that built the reputation, or Pure Milk Cream if the point is to taste the cream itself. Chocolate Earl Grey, Banana Chocolate and Biscoff Mocha are the richer end. Then add Dubai Mochi Balls or an Egg Tart for something to eat immediately rather than carry home.

Frequently asked questions

What should I order at Harucake?

A milk cream cake first. Green Grape Yogurt and Strawberry Milk Cream are the two most associated with the queue, while Pure Milk Cream is the plainest way to taste the organic fresh cream the bakery is built on. Chocolate Earl Grey, Banana Chocolate, Biscoff Mocha, Mont Blanc Chestnut and Lotus Mocha cover the richer end.

What is a Dubai Mochi Ball?

One of the bakery's Small Bakes, pairing chewy mochi with chocolate, pistachio cream and crisp kadayif pastry. It sits alongside the Egg Tart, a flaky shell filled with soft custard, as the only pastry work here beyond cakes. Both are made for eating on the spot rather than carrying home whole.

Why do the cakes sell out?

Every cake is made fresh to order rather than produced in advance, so daily output is limited by what the kitchen can build in a day. The counter typically sells through, and weekend queues can run to about two hours while weekdays move faster.
