Why go
One espresso, one filter, changed daily
One coffee runs on espresso and one on filter, and both are single origin, so the decision at this bar is between two brew methods rather than a long list. An EK-43 grinds for filter, a two-group La Marzocco Linea handles espresso and milk, and a Fetco covers batch brew for anyone who wants a cup without waiting for it.
The roasters have moved over the years, from La Cabra to Heart Coffee Roasters in Portland, and the bar has poured 49th Parallel at a time when nowhere else in Arizona did. Colombian cascara from Swillings Coffee has run alongside the coffee as the odd one out. The through line is not loyalty to a single roaster but a preference for clean, well-defined lots served two ways.
A coffee bar inside an arts compound
Futuro is not a standalone cafe. It sits inside PALABRA, a Phoenix compound that began in 2012 as an art gallery and hair salon and moved into its current home in early 2016, and which now holds art, design, music, coffee and a kitchen under one roof. That is why a coffee order here can arrive with an exhibition or a live session happening in the same building.
The room is severely minimal: white walls, white exterior, white bar, white cups, set against unfinished concrete floors and exposed beams. The building is a squat single-storey rectangle laid out in an H, with the entrance at the front, the coffee counter across the middle, seating to either side and corridors running back to a sheltered yard. There is a gallery area, a communal table, a long bench, small tables, black armchairs and outdoor seats, so the room absorbs both a quick espresso and a long stay. Pasado, a small-plates kitchen at the back of the compound, covers food.
Order the filter, then look around
Ask what is on filter first. The single filter offer is the clearest read on how the bar chooses coffee, and the EK-43 and the pour-over routine are set up to show origin character. If the batch brew is fresh, it is the faster version of the same idea.
On espresso, take it straight before ordering milk, since the bar runs single origins chosen for clarity rather than for punching through a large latte. If cascara is on, it is worth a cup for the contrast, a fruit infusion rather than a coffee. Then take the drink into the gallery side or out to the yard, because the coffee and the building are meant to be read together rather than treated as a takeaway counter and a separate art space.

Frequently asked questions
What should I order at Futuro?
Ask what is on filter. The bar runs one single-origin espresso and one filter at a time, so the filter is the clearest read on how it chooses coffee, ground on an EK-43 and brewed to order, with batch brew as the faster version. Espresso comes off a two-group La Marzocco Linea.
What is PALABRA?
The compound Futuro sits inside. It started in 2012 as an art gallery and hair salon and moved into its current home in early 2016, and it now gathers art, design, music, coffee and a small-plates kitchen called Pasado in one single-storey building, with a gallery area, communal seating and a sheltered yard.
