Why go
Roasting happens on the floor while you order. The Phoenix Roastery runs production in the same building as the coffee bar, with beans coming off the drum in view of the queue.
Daily roasting in Phoenix
This is more than a café counter pouring Press Coffee. The branch is the company’s roastery, roasting on site daily, and guests are invited to watch it happen rather than take the process on trust. Press has been roasting in Arizona since 2008, and the Roastery opened in July 2019 to put production, service and education under one roof.
That production role connects the room to Press’s sourcing relationships in Costa Rica, Ethiopia and Guatemala. The wider lineup runs through blends and espressos including Early Edition, Twitch Espresso, Four Corners, Spitball Espresso, Bloom, Union Espresso, Evergreen and Black Canyon.
Two floors and four ways to sit
The Roastery was built as a larger, bolder Press than the compact grab-and-go shops: 5,600 square feet across two levels, with a full coffee bar, a training space, a beer and wine component, and production in full view. The upper level was designed for private events and coffee classes, with room for more than thirty people.
Seating is central to the draw. There is productive table seating, casual bar seating, a patio, and a calmer second floor with an open-air feel, natural woods and modern comfort. The space works for watching the roast, settling in with a laptop, meeting over coffee, taking a Coffee 101 class or hosting a group, which is a wider brief than most roastery cafés attempt.
Start with the coffee, then eat properly
Coffee is the first order, since the building exists to roast it. The menu covers coffee, loose-leaf tea, pastries and food, and the bar is a full one. The most distinctive preparation is educational rather than a single drink: Coffee 101 uses the professional cupping format to compare beans and roasts side by side, with attention to coffee history and why coffees taste different.
Food matters more here than at the other Press shops. The kitchen has run a Southwest green chili pork burrito and a turkey, apple and brie sandwich, and this is the only Press location serving alcohol, with heartier plates including a meat and cheese board. Pastries stay on the menu for anyone who only wants something small beside the cup.
