Lightly roasted coffee under brick vaults, poured since 2012. Espresso Embassy opened as Budapest's first specialty coffee shop and still works to that brief, with carefully sourced beans, a compact room and a daytime crowd of office regulars, university people and travelling coffee enthusiasts.

Casino Mocca on the bar, guest roasters in rotation

Coffee comes first here, and the roaster relationships are the clearest sign of it. Casino Mocca, the Budapest roaster, has been the house name for years, and European guest roasters rotate through alongside it, Drop Coffee Roasters among them. The beans are carefully sourced and lightly roasted, and a great many Hungarian baristas and coffee professionals began their careers behind this bar. Brewing equipment sits on shelves by the counter, so the retail side is visible from the queue. Milk drinks matter as much as black coffee: the flat white comes out hot, rich and finished with velvety micro-foam.

Brick vaults, minimalist edges

The room is a major draw. The cafe occupies a 200-year-old building whose brick vaults give it a backdrop few specialty bars can match. Against that old shell the design is contemporary: minimalist decor, metal-wrapped flooring and counter surfaces, industrial lighting overhead. The contrast between brick, metal and coffee equipment defines the space. Small tables sit outside with more seating in, a compact central-city setup that suits a quick espresso, a conversation or a stretch of laptop time. The laptop policy is explicit, allowing screens only at the communal tables on weekends and holidays, which is a cafe balancing work against company. Wi-Fi is free and dogs are welcome.

Order the flat white first

Start with the flat white for the drink this bar is known for, the point where the espresso programme meets careful milk texture. To read the place through its roasters instead, look for Casino Mocca on the bar and whichever European guest roaster is in rotation that week. Food is a light cafe format: pastries, croissants, sandwiches and juices, enough for breakfast or a snack beside the coffee rather than a meal in itself. The reputation rests on the coffee, on more than a decade of influence on the Budapest scene, recognised again at the European Coffee Trip Awards in 2025, and on that brick-vaulted room.
