Why go
Two businesses share one counter near the Basilica in Budapest: CAUSE roasts and pours the coffee, SALT Bakery makes everything on the plate.
A roastery in the cup
CAUSE is a cafe and a roastery, not a multi-roaster bar working through someone else's beans, and the split with SALT Bakery lets it concentrate entirely on drinks. The emphasis falls on origin, processing and brew choice, which shows most clearly on the filter side; recent coffees have come from Costa Rica, Colombia, Guatemala and Panama. The shop is small and runs as an experimental space, so what is on the brew bar changes with what has just come out of the roaster.
Roasting in-house is the part that matters. It means the filter list is not assembled from other people's bags, and it is why asking what is open on the brew bar is a better question here than reading the menu board. Espresso is available for anyone who wants it, but filter is where the roasting is on show.
SALT Bakery on the plate
The food comes entirely from SALT Bakery, which supplies sourdough breads, fresh pastries, sandwiches and a Bakery Brunch. That makes CAUSE more than a coffee-only stop: strong enough for a pastry, a sandwich, or a full brunch plate taken with filter coffee or espresso.
The brunch list is more interesting than the phrase bakery cafe suggests: kimchi grilled cheese, yuzu-mayo grilled cheese, a Sacher-style sausage, and a soft-boiled egg with labneh and chili crisp. The sweet side runs to a croissant with jam, butter and Maldon salt, a flattened cocoa spiral with mascarpone cream, fruit and toffee, house granola with Greek yogurt and fruit, chia pudding, and a banana pudding with caramelized banana. Shelves and fridges carry deli goods too, including Szatmár dry-cured items, Élőbolygó dairy and juices.
Order a V60, then work through the bakery case
Start with a V60. The roastery side of CAUSE shows most clearly on filter, especially when a named origin and process are on the board, and it is the order that justifies the roasting in the first place.
Then choose from SALT's case rather than treating the plate as an afterthought. Sourdough or a pastry is the light version; the brunch dishes are the reason to sit down properly. If the visit is a short one, take a croissant with the coffee and look at the deli fridge on the way out. The two-business format is the whole point here: neither side is filling in around the other.

Frequently asked questions
What should I order at CAUSE Café & Roastery?
A V60 is the order that shows the roasting most clearly, especially when a named origin and process are on the board; recent coffees have come from Costa Rica, Colombia, Guatemala and Panama. Then take something from SALT Bakery's case, from sourdough and pastries to a full brunch plate.
How does the arrangement with SALT Bakery work?
The two businesses share one counter. CAUSE handles the coffee and the roasting, while SALT Bakery supplies the entire food side, including sourdough breads, fresh pastries, sandwiches and a Bakery Brunch. The result is that neither side is an afterthought for the other, which is unusual for a cafe this small.
