Cold brew, horchata and a surf-town counter

The Dirty Horchata is the order people cross the highway for, and the Cold Brew Iced Mocha is the drink that made the shop’s name in Urbiztondo. El Union has been roasting and pouring in San Juan, La Union, since 2013, which makes it one of the earlier specialty names attached to this stretch of Luzon’s northern coast. The brand takes its name from the province rather than from a founder.

Being a roaster as well as a café is the part that matters. The drinks are built on coffee the business roasts itself, which is unusual for a beach town and is the reason the shop reads as a specialty address rather than a holiday convenience.

Between the beach and the highway

Urbiztondo runs on surfing, beach stays and casual eating, and the café sits in the corridor that carries all of it. That shapes the visit: people arrive between plans, wet-haired or passing through, and the dine-in space is limited enough that the stop stays short by design.

The room has a rough, relaxed feel rather than a designed one, which fits a beach town where nobody changes clothes to buy coffee. Nothing about the room is precious, which is the correct answer to a beach a few minutes away. It works as a fixed point in a place that otherwise moves constantly, which is most of why a coffee shop opened in 2013 is still the one people name.

Order iced, then add grilled cheese

Start with the Cold Brew Iced Mocha. Cold brew gives it a smoother, lower-acid base than a standard iced coffee, and the mocha side keeps it approachable in heat, which is the whole point in La Union. The Dirty Horchata is the other one to know, cinnamon-sweet and cut with espresso. Both are built to survive the heat rather than to be admired.

For food, the grilled cheese is the named order and the right register: warm, handheld and built to go with an iced drink rather than to become a meal. Between the two, that is how El Union works, specialty coffee roasted under its own name, a surf-town pace, and orders short enough to carry back to the beach. It was placed 61st on The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops list in 2025.
