Roasting first, counter second

The roaster is the reason to stop. EigerBean turns out its own coffee in Grindelwald and sells it two ways, as whole beans or ground to order for taking home, and as drinks made at the counter. That order of priorities matters, because this is a roastery with a café attached rather than a café that happens to buy in good beans.

The company was set up in late 2022, which makes it a recent arrival in a village better known for cable cars than for coffee. The scale is small and the focus is narrow: one roaster's own coffee, prepared simply, without a guest-roaster list or a long kitchen menu behind the machine.

A village stop under the Eiger

Grindelwald traffic shapes the day. Walkers, skiers and people waiting on a connection pass the door in a steady stream, and the shop is set up for exactly that: order, drink or carry out, and carry on up the valley. The mountains are the backdrop rather than the subject, and the room itself stays compact and unfussy, with the roasting side of the business doing the talking instead.

It suits two quite different visits. One is the resupply run, where the point is a bag of beans roasted days rather than months ago to brew wherever you are staying. The other is the pause between the station and the slopes, where a single cup at the counter is the whole errand. Neither takes long, which is part of why the place works in a resort village.

What to ask for

Keep the plan coffee-led. Ask which roasts are on that week and whether you want them whole or ground, then decide between taking a bag away and having something made on the spot. The house does not build its identity on named signature drinks, so the espresso-based standards are the surest way in, and the beans are the thing worth carrying home.

Food is a sideline. Chocolate cake is the item that comes up most often beside the coffee, and hot chocolate is the alternative for anyone not drinking coffee, which in a Swiss mountain village is hardly a compromise. Anything more substantial is better found elsewhere in the village, and the counter is the better for not trying to be a restaurant as well.
